The Word
31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:31 (ESV)
Reflection
Many people are taught to be bold and confident. Much of this confidence comes from the world, which is built on human knowledge, self-reliance, and outward appearance. In many cases, this kind of confidence is manufactured, fake, and fragile. It can appear strong, but it often fails when it is tested or questioned.
In Acts chapter 4, we see a very different kind of boldness. After the healing of the lame man, Peter and John were confronted by the religious authorities, who questioned, threatened, and commanded them to stop speaking in the name of Jesus. When the believers heard about these threats, they did not panic or try to solve the problem through human means. They did not gather influence, form alliances, or depend on strategy alone. Instead, they came together in unity and prayer. They asked for boldness to continue speaking God’s word. They asked God to act through them, even in the face of danger.
God answered their prayer. The place where they were gathered was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gave them courage, clarity, and unwavering conviction. They continued to speak the word of God boldly, even though the risks remained. This passage shows that true boldness is not self-generated. It comes from the Holy Spirit. It is not based on personality, status, or human strength. It is rooted in faith, obedience, and dependence on God. This kind of boldness does not fade under pressure. It grows stronger.
Application
It is easy to conform to the patterns of this world. It is easy to give in to fear, remain silent, or settle into comfort. When challenges arise, we often rely on our own understanding or withdraw to protect ourselves. We are invited to come to God in prayer, not only in times of need, but especially when we face opposition or uncertainty. Instead of asking only for relief, we should ask God to fill us with His Holy Spirit and give us the strength to stand firm in His truth. We need to seek boldness rooted in God’s presence, not in our own ability. This will enable us to speak His word with confidence, live faithfully, and remain steady even when it is difficult.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Help me today to be bold as a witness to the Gospel message. Give me strength and courage to stand for biblical principles and to speak Your Word in boldness. In Jesus’ name. Amen
