Acts: Bee‑lievers at Work – How God Builds Us Through Community

Written by Bebe Thomas

The Word

42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

43 Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all the believers were together and had all things in common; 45 and they would sell their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need. 46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Reflection

Last week, I had the unexpected joy of listening to a local beekeeper describe the beauty—and the sticky challenges—of tending hives. One detail stayed with me long after the presentation. She explained that throughout their short lives, bees move through a series of age‑based roles within the hive. Each worker bee simply steps into the next task as it matures, serving the hive faithfully until its life ends about 45 days after birth.

At first, that rhythm of life and death sounded somber, but the more I thought about it, the more beautiful it became—especially after serving with our Women’s Ministry team this past weekend.

Since my mom passed away this past fall, I’ve had days when the sadness feels heavy and unrelenting. My instinct is often to withdraw, yet I’ve learned that joy finds me most easily when I’m in community. Grief has required solitude at times, but not complete isolation.

This weekend, something in me lifted. Our team was setting up for the Women’s Ministry event, and because we’ve served together for over a year, we each naturally stepped into our roles—much like the bees in their hive. New volunteers joined in seamlessly, and together we “set the table” for the women of our church to encounter Jesus. Music played, laughter rose, and when Big God by Tim Godfrey & The Fearless Community came on, I couldn’t help but dance. It was simple, joyful, and holy.

Tim Keller once wrote that the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians collectively as we are built together into a spiritual temple—block by block, with Christ as the cornerstone. Acts 2:42–47 paints that same picture: a community devoted to teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, prayer, generosity, and shared life.

If God assigns purpose even to the humble worker bee, how much more does He care about the purpose He has placed in us. And often, He reveals that purpose most clearly when we show up, serve, and allow ourselves to be woven into the life of the community.

Application

Acts 2:42–47 reminds us that spiritual growth is not meant to happen in isolation. The early church flourished because they were devoted—to Scripture, to fellowship, to shared meals, to prayer, and to caring for one another’s needs.

Like the bees, each of us has a role in the hive of God’s people. Our roles may shift with seasons of life, but the call remains the same: to contribute, to belong, and to build up the body of Christ.

God meets us in community. He heals us in community. And He reveals purpose in community.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of community and for the way You knit Your people together. Thank You for lifting my spirit this weekend and reminding me that joy often rises when I am with others. As I continue to walk through grief, breathe Your peace into the places that still ache. Help me to show up, to serve faithfully, and to trust that You are revealing purpose in every season. Build me into Your spiritual house, alongside my brothers and sisters, with Christ as the cornerstone. Amen.

I really enjoyed how you took the life of a worker bee and connected it to this passage. Thank you for also being open and honest in your sharing!
