The Word
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. –Acts 2:1-4 ESV
Aisha’s Analysis
The day of Pentecost depicted above is a beautiful fulfillment of God’s promise of the Holy Spirit to His followers. The arrival of the Holy Spirit is what powers our lives as believers. Before His grand entrance, humanity had limited access to God under certain, stringent conditions. Now, after Jesus’ ascension to Heaven, with the sin of humanity fully paid for with the blood of Christ, the Holy Spirit comes on the scene like a mighty rushing wind, filling the entire space where the disciples were waiting.
Interestingly, the Spirit manifested as divided tongues of fire resting on each one of them (v. 3), which resulted in speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance (v. 4). This overflow of supernaturally speaking in native languages of the people there is indicative of God’s heart to unify people and build bridges.
This also shows us the work of unifying divided hearts and divided people groups is not something we can do on our own. It stems from a personal partnership with the Holy Spirit, and it starts with a willing, waiting heart.
Application
The scintillating entrance of the Holy Spirit depicted in the scriptures above shows us the Lord’s desire to be fully integrated with and influence our day-to-day lives. Yet, how often do we ignore this amazing gift and choose to go our own way?
Whether by oversight or intention, the error of ignoring the Holy Spirit in our lives has lasting implications. In what ways can you practically invite the Holy Spirit into your daily routine? Could you fellowship with Him in the ordinary things like brushing your teeth or enjoying your daily cup of coffee or tea?
Perhaps you can even devote some time in your schedule to specifically wait for the Holy Spirit to fill up your space. In doing so, you’ll be welcoming fresh wind and fresh fire to re-ignite your life and minister reconciliation within yourself and those around you.
Prayer
Father God, I’m forever grateful for the gift of the Holy Spirit You have lavished on my life. What a blessing it is to have Your indwelling and manifest presence always available to me. May I never lose sight of my greatest treasure: Your voice speaking to me. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
