Gospel of Luke: Examine Your Motives

Written by Bebe Thomas

The Word

45 And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love personal greetings in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47 who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive all the more condemnation.”

-Luke 20:45-47

Reflection

In Luke 20:45-47, Jesus warns the crowds and His disciples about the scribes—religious leaders known for their outward displays of piety and prominence. His caution highlights the danger of spiritual pride and hypocrisy. Like His warning in Luke 17:1-4, Jesus takes sin seriously; not only personal temptations, but also the example one sets for others. The scribes love recognition, seek seats of honor, and use their religious authority for personal gain, all while making lengthy prayers to appear devout. Jesus declares they will receive greater condemnation for such hypocrisy.

This passage challenges us to reflect on the dangers of outward religiosity without inward authenticity. Just as Jesus warns of being a stumbling block in Luke 17, here He exposes the spiritual peril of leading others astray through self-centeredness and pretense.

Application

Jesus’ teaching calls us to examine the motives behind our faith and leadership. In Luke 17:1-4, we see that Jesus calls for both vigilance and grace in relationships. Similarly, Luke 20:45-47 calls for humility and sincerity in spiritual life. Although our motivations may start sincere, sin can creep in. Pray that the Lord’s grace and mercy will motivate all that you do so that He may receive the glory in all things.

  • Am I motivated to serve God, or am I seeking approval and honor from others?
  • Do I use my influence to help others grow in faith, or to build my own reputation?
  • Is my spiritual life marked more by appearance or by genuine humility and love?
  • If these questions lead to discomfort, let them move you toward honest self-examination and prayer.

Prayer

Lord, grant us humble hearts that seek Your approval above all else. Keep us from pride and hypocrisy. Help us to serve others with sincerity and to reflect Your integrity in all we do. May our lives point people to Your love and truth, never causing any to stumble. Amen.
