Gospel of Luke: Childlike Faith

Written by Stefan Johnsson

The Word

15 Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

Luke 18:15-17 (ESV)

Reflection

A former pastor I heard speak on these verses gave a great illustration. He used his young daughter to show what a childlike faith is, how she would raise up her hands to him when she wanted to be picked up. She had the utmost confidence that he would lift her, keep her safe, and hold her close. There was no doubt in her mind that her dad loved and cared for her. Her faith in him was uncorrupted and unbroken.

The hardships of life often cause us to forget what a childlike faith is. People hurt us and break our trust. Though, in order for us to truly turn to God and trust Him, we have to let go of those who hurt us, even if it was our parents. Our Father in heaven is a perfect Father and He can do what our earthly parents could not, which is to love us perfectly, fully, and wholly.

Application

God calls everyone to Him, even those who are infants. You should look at the young ones in your life who trust in their parents(or in you) just like how they trust in God and imitate their behavior. Forget the hurt and pain, put it on the altar and give it to God. Let Him renew your heart and passion for love. You can trust in Him.

Prayer

Thank you Father for all that You do and who You are. I am weak and hurting from the evils that this world brings. You are my salvation and Lord and let me come to You as a child, full of trust and devotion to You. I know that You will pick me up and hold me close. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. The two simplest words “Daddy, up!” show us best how to trust. Thanks Stefan.
