The Word
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)
Aisha’s Analysis
The above scripture shows us that God’s word can show us how to live. It shows us how to discern what is true, realize what is wrong, correct us, and prepare and equip us for every good work.
If you ask me, that’s mighty powerful! Not only does God’s word give us a standard by which to live by, but also the Holy Spirit, who authored God’s Word, empowers us to live up to that standard every day. What a victorious life God has called us to!
It’s not about trying to do what only God can do. It’s about receiving what God has already done. Does that mean we can live any way we want without any regard to God’s word? Certainly not! But it does mean that God has already done all the heavy-lifting and has already paved the way for our victory over sin and death.
Letting God’s word have the final say in your life means you have set your heart to trust and obey Him. You’re not trying to wiggle your way out of obeying Him. Obeying God can be costly but it’s always worth it. It basically boils down to a decision to let God’s word be true regardless of whatever excuses you might have for why your situation is different. Doesn’t matter. God’s word remains true every time.
Application
Allow yourself to be trained by the Word of God. What is an area you struggle with? This could be things like anxiety, fear, finances, anger, pride, etc. Find out what the Bible has to say about that specific issue. If you have a topical Bible, you can look up scriptures based on the topic or just Google “scriptures about ____________.” Find as many references as you can, read commentaries, do word-studies, and diligently seek to grasp the scriptures in your heart concerning whatever it is you’re dealing with. Try to get to the root of the issue. Could it be that you’re not truly trusting God?
The way to build trust is by establishing a relationship. As you read the scriptures which are inspired by God, you’ll get to know His nature and character and begin to trust Him more and more. As you do, the desire to let His word have the final say in your life will grow.
Prayer
Father God, I may not always understand what Your word says, but I want to. I may not always want to do what Your word says, but I want to even when it means choosing the harder thing to do. You’re worth it, and You always will be. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
