The Word
“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”
Ephesians 5:15-17 (NKJV)
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”
Matthew 7:24-25 (NIV)
Reflection
Merrium-Webster defines the word “wisdom” as deep understanding, keen discernment, sound judgement, and the intelligent application of knowledge. Paul says the wise are careful with their lifestyles and make the most with the time they are given. They build their foundation on Jesus Christ, the True Rock (Matthew 7:24-27). If we look at history and current events, we know bad, even horrible things happen, and a strong foundation in Jesus Christ prepares us for the storms to come.
Paul also says the wise understand what the Lord’s will is and act upon it. This can be seen in two ways: general will, how we are to act as Christ-followers, which is found in Scriptures, and particular will, what career to pursue, where to live, be single or marry, whom to marry, the decision to have kids, how many, is sought in prayer and guidance from mature Christ-followers.
Application
If you’re looking for wisdom, begin with the book of Proverbs, written by the second wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon. Or the Gospels, the teachings of the wisest man who ever lived. Absorb the words, meditate on them, and put them into practice.
Maybe you’re seeking God’s particular will for your life. Spend time with Him in prayer and seek advice from mature Christ-followers who know you well.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, help me to become more wise in Your Eyes. Please guide me to live in Your Will and walk in Your Ways. In Your Name I pray, amen.
