John 21:12-14

The Word

12 “Come, let’s have some breakfast,” Jesus said to them.

And not one of the disciples needed to ask who it was, because every one of them knew it was the Lord. 13 Then Jesus came close to them and served them the bread and the fish. 14 This was the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection.

Exegesis

The resurrected Lord invited the disciples and He is serving them breakfast. How fitting! Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve.  His leadership was courageous and bold but always filled with compassion and practical service. I am sure the disciples were filled with awe and reverence because of the marvelous revelation of himself to them.

When Jesus served the bread and fish, he did not say a prayer (blessing) like he did when feeding the five thousand, at this moment, his presence with them was the blessing.

Application

Jesus serving the breakfast here is a leadership quality, setting an example. He is our hero, and in his moment of glory, Jesus is the servant to those who failed Him. Bosses may get a lot out of workers, but servant-leaders put a lot into workers so that the work gets done and the workers are blessed. No one questions the bosses, but the disciples could ask Jesus questions and follow His lead!

If Jesus could serve those who disappointed him, then so can you and I; If Jesus could serve in His power and glory, then so should you and I.
