Devotional for March 31st, 2017

I. The Word: Romans 7:13-25

13Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

14For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. 15For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. 17So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

21I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. 24Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

II. Reflection Questions:

1. Look at v. 14…when where you “sold into bondage to sin?”

2. Re-read verses 15-24…every felt like this? If so, when? What got you out of that funk if you ever did?

3. How can you today show true authentic thanks to God because of what Jesus Christ has done?

One response to “Devotional for March 31st, 2017”

  1. 1. Look at v14… when where you”sold into bondage to sin?
The year 2015, where I didn’t want to be part of anything. I’d purposely miss church, didn’t want to be part of the church, I withdrew myself. I didn’t care to be part of any of it. I felt in adequate and wanted to run and never come back.
    2. Re-read v 15-24…ever felt like this? If so? When? What got me out of that funk if you ever did?
    1) Yes. If so? When? It goes back to 2015, I didn’t feel smart enough to this crowd so I’d close myself off. What got you out of the funk if you ever did? The year 2916, Ji did a devotional for a week I worked on the devotion. After I came out of it I got tired of acting like a fool.
    3. How can today show true authentic thanks to God because of what Jesus Christ has done?
    Romans 5:6-11
For while we were still weak at the right time of Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person – but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since therefore, we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by His life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
