About City Life Starter

At City Life Houston, we are passionate about God’s Word. We believe that meditating and studying the Bible is critical to the spiritual health of a follower of Christ.

We also believe that proper interpretation and exegesis serve as important tools to grasp God’s Word and apply it to our lives.

We have found that many people ask the question: How and where do you start when opening the scripture? The depth of your relationship with God hinges on your understanding of Christ and His Word. We want to help you get started and continue in your understanding of the scripture.

One definition for a starter is a device for starting an internal-combustion engine, usually consisting of a powerful electric motor that engages with the flywheel. That’s a great picture for what we are trying to accomplish. We want this to be a tool for you to “explode” life into your Bible study and help you become versed and excited about the Word of God.

The Word: Bible passages

Each day, you will read Bible passages chosen by one of our contributors. All the selected verses are designed to help you reflect on the Sunday sermon and deepen your understanding of the topic. We encourage you to read the passage slowly and try to remember the Word as it will lead to further reflection.

Contributor’s Commentary + Reflection

This is a supplementary section where you will find further information on the verses you read and helps you to truly think upon the Word of God. We plan to share our thoughts in this section, from Scriptural context to questions to reflect on. The goal is to meditate upon the Scripture and reflect on it throughout the day.

Application

We want to make sure you can, not only understand the Biblical passage and it’s meaning to your life, we also want you to apply it. God’s Word is sharper than a two-edged sword that cuts deep into your soul (Hebrews 4:12) and is used for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness (2nd Timothy 3:16). We need to apply what God says so we can be the church to our families and community.

Prayer

We normally end with a short prayer that guides you together with the devotional. It is only a supplementary prayer as you should let your heart speak to God and what He wants to teach you based on His Word through the devotional.

A Message From The Editor

This site is dedicated to helping our church and anyone who may visit to have a map for reading and studying the scriptures.

At City Life Houston, we want to encourage you to have a personal relationship with God through His Word, and also equip you to do so. Our focus is to preach the gospel on Sunday mornings, and encourage application, prayer as we engage in community with our City Life Groups.

Our hope is to equip you with daily scriptures and commentaries that correlate with what we are studying together as a church.

Our current writing team consists of passionate men and women of God who are elders, deacons, and members in our church. You will be enriched through the various styles of writing, scriptural commentary, and application.
