Gospel of Luke: Solid Food

Written by Stefan Johnsson

The Word

27 As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Luke 11:27-28 (ESV)

Reflection

There are two very interesting statements that we get in verse 27 and 28. In verse 27, the woman in the crowd spoke that Jesus is blessed in a very unique way that sets Him apart from everyone else. In essence, it could be considered a confirmation of Jesus as the Messiah. For us today, that would be similar to praising Jesus and worshipping Him in church. We see Jesus and love Him for what He has done for us. This is not a bad thing, and Jesus does not rebuke the woman, but instead adds to it.

In verse 28, Jesus points us to the Bible. This is something we cannot miss. Many Christians are stuck on just worshipping Jesus, but then have no spiritual discipline to grow in faith. In essence, they are stuck drinking milk and not solid food. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:2:

I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready,

We have to move to solid food by following Jesus’ Words as He reminds us to do in verse 28. Blessed are those who hear the Word(read and comprehend) and keep it(obey and follow).

Application

Many Christians are stuck in the experiential parts of worshipping and praising Jesus. This is not a bad thing in itself, but one can easily be manipulated by false prophets and teachers if there’s no strong biblical foundation to stand on. We must move on to solid food by hearing God’s Word and doing what it says.

What are you doing today to practice the spiritual disciplines that truly help you to listen and obey God’s Word?

Prayer

Father in heaven, help me to grow in my spiritual disciplines. I need to grow in faith through eating solid food. Do not let me be caught by hollow and deceptive philosophies because I could not hear and obey Your Words. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
