The Word
18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John,
19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?”
20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’”
21 In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight.
22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.
23 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
-Luke 7:18-23
Reflection
This passage opens a question that hangs in the air around the reader: why would John (the Baptist) now be so doubtful about Jesus’ identity? After all, John proclaimed Him, “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” We can only guess, as John’s doubt is not explicitly stated. However, this much is clear: Jesus was not meeting John’s expectations.
I think John, and many others, wanted their Messiah to be more aggressive against the religious leaders or the Roman occupation. He might expect to see a particular character, of a conquering king, one that would go to battle like the judges or kings of old. Could Jesus be vindicated in some way, like with fire from heaven that fell for Elijah among the idolaters on Mount Carmel? Surely, Israel’s Messiah would confront injustice, particularly the injustice carried out against His own chosen people?
Application
Have you ever been let down by Jesus? I don’t mean to suggest that He has failed you, but perhaps He didn’t act the way you expected? Have you then been led to wonder if He is trustworthy?
Take 10 minutes today to consider what action you might wish from the all-powerful God, but does not align with the way of Jesus. If there are individuals that you hold resentment for, take steps to forgive them in your mind and heart, allowing God to vindicate you in His time. Ask Him to meet those who are hurting, perhaps yourself, with healing. Confess to Him any doubt about who He is because of your expectations.
Prayer
Jesus, I am sorry for the times I have wanted my way more than Your way. Help my unbelief, Lord. Amen
