Hebrews: The All-Powerful God

The Word

Hebrews 12:25-29

25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.

Reflection

In C.S. Lewis’ children’s tale, The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe, Mr. Beaver speaks of Aslan the Lion:

“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good”.

Let’s be clear. God is not safe. There are plans for a reckoning, a shaking, a fire (2 Pt 3:7), which will annihilate everything opposed to Him. It is good to ponder on the terrible holiness of God, maintaining a healthy understanding of how close we are to a Being far more powerful than a trillion suns. This should continually inspire in us a reverent fear, repentance of sin, and, most especially, worship!

Conversely, if we think God small, distant, or unwilling to reckon with evil, we can easily drift from the truth, dismissing the sacrifice of Jesus, the good news of the gospel, and the unshakable kingdom that will endure forever. Detached from this reality, nothing will remain.

Application

Consider the unfathomable, righteous power of God. This God has made provision, by the death and resurrection of Jesus, for you to stand with Him in the fury of His judgement as a co-heir of His Kingdom. Take time today to bask in His powerful, loving presence. Confess your faults. Worship. Prepare for eternity with this marvelous being.

Prayer

Father,
I am grateful that You are not safe, for a weak god cannot save.
I am grateful that You forgive, as much as it cost You, because I have so badly betrayed You in my sin.
I am grateful that You love, and that You desire for me to be with You.
Amen
