Hebrews: High Priest and Sacrificial Lamb

Written by Megan Meier

The Word

“14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV

Reflection

Jesus Christ is the only high priest referred to as “great.” He is the High Priest in the order of Melchizedek, who preceded the Levite priests (Genesis 14:18). The high priest in Hebrew culture intervened for the people with animal sacrifices to atone for sins. The Hebrews would have been familiar with the book of Leviticus and the rules regarding animal sacrifice, such as the reason, what animal, and what traditions the priest followed for atonement. Jesus intervened with His very life, He fulfilled both roles of High Priest and the Sacrificial Lamb.

After Jesus rose from the dead He passed through to heaven, fully alive (Mark 16:19). The author instructs the Hebrews to hold fast to their confession, to remember the Lord. The Hebrew word for “remember” is zakar, which means to keep in mind and act on that person’s behalf. The Hebrews were instructed to keep the Lord Jesus in mind and act on His behalf.

Jesus was fully God and fully human (Philippians 2:6-8, Colossians 2:9). He was just like us, tempted and tried (lyrics to the song Lead Me to The Cross by Hillsong, video below). He was tempted to use His gifts for His own purposes, to test God, and to give up His destiny, but He did not give in. Jesus combated all three temptations with the Word of God (Matthew 4:1-11). The Word of God is the greatest weapon we have against our enemy (Hebrews 4:12).

Those who accept Jesus Christ and what He did can come to the throne of God, not groveling, not with downcast eyes, but with confidence and head held high. They will receive mercy and find grace because Jesus, our Great High Priest and Sacrificial Lamb, paid the price once and for all. When you come to God’s Throne, if you ask, He will give You the power to resist sin (James 4:7).

Application

Whatever you’ve done, if you’re truly repentant, Jesus has forgiven you. Come to the throne of grace with confidence that mercy will be freely given, and He will give you the power to resist sin. Use the Word of God as your weapon against the enemy. Zakar the Lord Jesus Christ, keep Him in mind and act on His behalf.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You that because of what You did on the cross that I can come to Your Throne of Grace with confidence and be free of sin. Thank You for being my High Priest and Sacrificial Lamb. In Your Name I pray, amen.
