Hebrews: A Lesson in Understatement

Written by Nate Warren

The Word

8bAt present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.
But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
Hebrews 2:8b-9 ESV

Reflection

Let’s imagine that we’re hearing this message preached to us in a congregation of devoted followers of Jesus.

The preacher directly, dryly retorts:

At present, we do not yet see everything under subjection to Christ.

The tension in the room dials up. It’s hard not to scoff at how obvious the acknowledgement is. The thoughts, “You can say that again,” and “Duh,” involuntarily jump out of the lips of someone across the room.

Of course, the Hebrews of the middle-first century would have the same reaction. They are surrounded by a world going berserk, just as we are today. Clearly, unquestionably, we do not yet see everything under subjection to Christ! We consider all of the pain, the broken relationships, the sheer evil, the injustice… how could the preacher be so… insensitive to the reality of evil in our world?

But this was only the hook – the real mic-drop moment is hanging in the air. The preacher unloads the greater truth in even more subtlety of voice:

But we see Him… crowned with glory and honor…

Now it’s clear. The room exhales in shouts of “Amen!” and “Hallelujah!” Our gaze has now shifted far away from troubles, and onto Him, the “radiance of God’s glory” who “upholds the universe by the Word of his power.” (Heb 1:3)

Application

It takes no effort at all to be reminded what is wrong with the world. Indeed, denying or ignoring the reality of evil only bolsters and reinforces these strongholds woven into the fabric of our human societies and institutions. If we only see that, then insanity, despair, or both is not far away. It’s only in seeing Him that the realities of this world will not overwhelm us.

How will you arrange your schedule to regularly refocus your mind’s eye on Jesus–everything, anything about Him? Write down your plan. If you journal, then journal it. Set an alarm on your phone. Do whatever it takes to keep your eyes on Him.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to see You.
Let my heart see Your incredible love for me, as I share that love with others.
Let my mind be blown over and over by revelations Your wisdom.
Let my body be disciplined in virtue, patient in suffering, and reflexive in obedience to You.
Let my soul be at rest in Your comfort.
Amen
