Unshakables: Is It in You?

Written by Aisha Darwesh

The Word

So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. 2 Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, 3 now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.

1 Peter 2:1-3 (NLT)

7 The instructions of the Lord are perfect,
reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
8 The commandments of the Lord are right,
bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are clear,
giving insight for living.

Psalm 19:7-8 (NLT)

Aisha’s Analysis

One of my favorite commercials/slogans is from Gatorade where they would show athletes accomplishing great things and sweating out brightly colored gatorade flavors asking “is it in you?”

That’s a very good illustration of what God’s Word in us looks like. We consume His word and are empowered to do amazing things. The evidence of God’s Word in us ought to seep out into our everyday reality.

We can’t consume it and remain unchanged. The scripture is nourishment for our souls. It is absolutely crucial for our survival, growth, and maturation in Christ. Like newborn babies crying out for milk, we need God’s Word desperately.

Not only that, God’s Word is also instructive, corrective, and selective. Like a sharp scalpel in the hands of a skillful surgeon, it cuts out the sinful disease that is still lurking in our thoughts and flesh:

12 For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, and revealed to the eyes of Him with whom we have to give account.

Hebrews 4:12-13 (Amplified).

God’s Word causes us to grow strong in Christ and corrects the old patterns of sinful behavior holding us back. Further, it empowers us to live in a way that glorifies our Father and experience the very best He has for us.

Application

Do you drag your feet when it comes to reading God’s Word? Don’t be dismayed. We live in an age of distraction. There are so many things vying for our attention, it’s hard to keep our heads from spinning.

From the latest show that’s trending on your platform of choice to endless mindless scrolling online to all the many things we have going on, it’s a miracle we get anything done for God’s Kingdom. In a world filled with so many choices, the decision to read God’s Word becomes that much more important.

Whether it’s 5 minutes or 50, whether it’s a little or a lot, make up your mind to read God’s Word every day and see what happens. Try to learn of God’s character and nature as you read. Try to incorporate God’s Word into your daily routine as much as possible. It could be first thing in the morning when you’re drinking your coffee, while walking on the treadmill, while on your lunch break, while sitting in traffic, or what have you.

Don’t let distractions rob you of your time with God. Even if you’re strapped for time and don’t have any time in your schedule to spare, make a decision to give God your best. He’s worth it, and you won’t regret it.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for providing the beautiful riches of Your Word to me so readily. I’m so blessed to have access to a Bible. I want to get Your word in me and share it with the world. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
