Recalled: Denial and Busyness vs. Confrontation

Written by Megan Meier

The Word

“Then Jesus turned to the Jews who had claimed to believe in him. ‘If you stick with this, living out what I tell you, you are my disciples for sure. Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you.’”

John 8:31-32 (MSG)

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)

Reflection

A while back, I purchased some pre-made coconut chicken and was looking forward to preparing delicious (and quick) lunches for the week. But I received a phone call that said this product was being recalled due to potential undercooking. Yes, I was disappointed, and inconvenienced, but I got a full refund and didn’t end up hospitalized from food poisoning (pay the farmer now or the doctor later).

What if I didn’t return the contaminated food back to the authorities? What if I threw it away? I would have wasted money. Or worse, what if I ignored the warning, or became too busy to remember, and ate it? We don’t intend to ignore what needs to be fixed, or let busyness get in the way. Sometimes we’re just running around and around and we forget why we’re so busy, or even if the reason is that important. What about outright denial?  Maybe out of pride or shame, or pride covering shame. Or fear of exploring why we need to be recalled, what’s happened in our pasts that has lead us to be this way.

To be a disciple (or student) of Jesus, we are to become more like Him, spirit-empowered. It might mean recalling some flaws we have, bringing it to the Manufacturer, and letting Him fix it. Temporary broken pride is better than a long-term broken soul.

Application

Is there anything in your life that needs to be recalled? Take it directly to the Manufacturer, in fact, He’s waiting for you to bring it to Him. Depending on what needs to be recalled, He will likely invite you to participate in the healing. Use the Manufacturer’s Book for guidance in what needs to be recalled. If you need help exploring the negative emotions, tell a mature Christian friend, or consult a counselor.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank You for being willing to take what’s wrong with me and make it right. Grant me the courage to give it all to You. Thank You for fixing me. In Your Name I pray, amen.
