The Word
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…
Genesis 1:26
Commentary
The reference to “Us” and “Our” here is a revelation of the trinity. “Us” and “Our” are pronouns referring to God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. All three are God. They are one and they are three. Hence, in the godhead, there is diversity, and there is unity.
The diversity in the godhead is not mere semantics. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit have different roles, and the Father and the Holy Spirit, are spirit, while the Son is incarnate. Additionally, the first is the Father, the Son the King, and the Holy Spirit the Comforter. These are just some of the ways in which the godhead is diverse.
When the Bible says, “Let Us make man in Our image…’ it means God purposively implanted diversity in man, not in the singular man but in the collective mankind. The diversity of the image of God as imparted in man then is only fully experienced in the diversity of mankind. Stated another way, for us to enjoy the diversity that is part of the image of God, we must fully embrace the racial diversity of mankind.
Application
The implications of this should rock our worldview. Racial diversity in government, the arts, and the workplace, for example, need not be justified merely in terms of fairness; in fact, that is a less important reason for seeking diversity. Racial diversity should be our goal because we want the full counsel of God and the reflection of His image in man brought to bear in our government, arts, and commerce. Racial diversity and inclusion is not merely a good idea; it is a God idea.
Prayer
Lord, help me to more fully appreciate the benefits of the diversity of the godhead as reflected in the diversity of mankind. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
