Leading through Uncertainty – Leaders Lovingly Sacrifice

The Word

“‘Do you understand what I have done for you?…Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”

John 13:12b-14

Reflection

In first-century Israel, footwear was restricted to sandals. When you wear sandals and walk around a lot (even if it isn’t in a filthy road), your feet inevitably get dirty. And back then, people did not eat at tables, but lounging. Nobody wanted another person’s dirty feet in their face, so foot washing before communal meals was essential. This job was delegated to the lowest servant, because it involved not only washing off road dirt, but (if you are eating, proceed with caution!) even animal and human waste (disposable gloves were not invented until 1889).

The disciples had often argued which of them was the greatest, no doubt they thought among themselves who was going to wash everyone’s feet, and their Lord, the King of Kings, did a task reserved for the lowliest human. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, got down on his knees and cleaned the filth from his disciples, wiping it with the towel around His waist. Jesus not only showed an example of how they should act, but foreshadowed what He would do the next day, washing the filth from all of us by taking it upon Himself with the lowest and most excruciating form of execution.

Jesus knew who He was, He didn’t feel the need to validate His importance, and He knew a certain job had to be done. He didn’t resent it or show any signs of disgust while washing the filth off, but the nominated disciple likely would have. Seeing their beloved Teacher doing such a lowly task (maybe even cheerfully!) threw their pride out the window, jump-starting their journey into becoming great leaders themselves.

Application

Any humble, even disgusting, tasks that have to be done? Try smiling while doing it! It may catch on!

Prayer

Dearest Lord, help me to sacrifice my pride and to practice humility, to show others a Christ-like attitude. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
