The Word

And Joshua commanded the officers of the people, 11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’”

Joshua 1:10-11 (ESV)

Interpretation

Joshua assumed the command and leadership from Moses. The Israelites were at the cusp of confusion as Moses, who spoke to God face to face and led them so far, is gone. They still had not reached their promised land. They knew very well that they had formidable enemies and the task in front appeared to be insurmountable. Joshua had to lead a nation in crisis. He assumed change and imparted confidence, hope and courage to his people. He commanded his officers to walk through the camp and to prepare for the coming tasks and told them what God can do with whatever they have. Joshua rallied his people to war.

Application

Decisive leadership will seek God’s counsel and act with wisdom, which is of immense importance during times of crises. Joshua sought God and he was present in the camp with his people. He did not run away from the problems but was there with a plan in the middle of uncertainty. He gave a plan for his people to prepare and a definite time frame. He also gave them what their target is going to be, to prepare for war! Crisis made him strong and to go on the offensive. He imparted his courage and confidence to others.

It is essential to seek God’s counsel and plan during any crisis. Indecisiveness and passivity will breed discontent and lead to defeat. We need a time bound plan of action in accordance to what God wants in one’s life. We also need to rally people around us who will prayerfully support us and surround us. It is essential to be focused on the mission and not to give up when circumstances are not favorable. One should stay strong and should not surrender to the circumstances. A crisis when handled with divine wisdom and decisiveness will become an opportunity and a sling shot to propel forwards towards the mission. 

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Help us not to crumble in times of uncertainty and crises. Help us to hold on to you and trust your goodness. Help us to be decisive and confident that you will carry us through. Help us to see you and prepare for the mission just like Joshua did. In Jesus’ name, amen.
