The Word

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:15-17

If there is ‘Something Behind’, then either it will have to remain altogether unknown to men or else make itself known in some different way. The statement that there is any such thing, and the statement that there is no such thing, are neither of them statements that science can make.

Supposing science ever became complete so that it knew every single thing in the whole universe. Is it not plain that the questions, ‘Why is there a universe?’ ‘Why does it go on as it does?’ ‘Has it any meaning?’ would remain just as they were?

Exegesis

Science can never give us the answer to the question of ‘why’ and ‘how.’ These two answers can only be found through our belief in a ‘Something” that created us. Paul, in his letter to the church of Colossus, explains this reason of why and how. Why, because God selflessly created us to enjoy the love within the Triune Godhead, giving us the chance to experience Him. The How is through the Word(Jesus), which He spoke the world into being. As John says, “In the beginning was the Word…”, and “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

I may be skipping ahead from where C.S. Lewis was going in chapter 4, but the point here is clear. Christianity answers the ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions that no scientist could answer. These are questions that have plagued the intellectual minds for millennia, and yet, the answer was made plain to them through the life of Jesus, if they were just willing to see and accept.

All things created was through the Word(Jesus) and it is because of the Father making himself known through Jesus, that we can understand and know that we are loved. How amazing is that?

Application

Apologetics is a subject that I’ve spent hours reading and studying to satisfy the nerd within me. One very interesting fact based on Colossians 1:17 is the protein “Laminin”. It is the protein that holds our cells and organs together. When you look at this protein through the microscope, what you see is a shape that is similar to a cross. Interesting how God designed a shape that holds us together to be in the shape of a cross, wouldn’t you agree?

Science found the protein “Laminin”, they studied how it worked and the function behind it. Science can, eventually tell us everything we would need to know about this specific protein and how it functions. Yet, science cannot explain how and why this protein was created in the way that it was.

Will you trust a scientist to answer the questions of why and how for you? Or will you find the answer in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus?

Prayer

Thank you Father for giving us an amazing life that is filled with a creation that keeps pointing us to you and the love You have for us. We praise you and thank for giving us the chance to see and experience everything that you have created for us. You are the reason for our existence. Thank you Father.
