The Word

¹¹ And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. ¹² While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

Interpretation

Jesus knew well he was going to die in flesh and fulfill the mission given to him by God the Father. When his mission was coming to an end, He made this prayer towards his Heavenly father for his disciples. He was advocating for them and asked that his disciples be taken care of when he will not be physically around.

Jesus, as a great shepherd and true high priest, was handing over his flock and prayed for them that they may be taken care of well. He also tells his heavenly Father all that he did for his disciples, He kept them, guarded them well. Just like he did everything according to the will of His Father, he prayed that his disciples also will do their very best and do God’s will.

Application

God has called us to do His mission on this earth as God’s agent here for some time. One of our aims in life should be to find and mentor others who will do the same after our time in this planet is over. We need to make way, train and be a good role model for the future generation. As a good steward, we need to take good care of what is entrusted to us.

There will come a day when we will have to give an account of our loved ones before God. Can we say as Jesus said, ‘I have kept them’ and ‘I have guarded them’? Do we have the passion to pray for our mentees? Do we have the courage to pass on the baton and make way to others who will run the next leg of the race by giving our wishes and blessings?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus. Thanks for sending us a model teacher and leader to look up to. Help us to emulate Jesus day by day and do our responsibilities well and finish our race. Help us to mentor and make disciples, equip and bless them to take over your mission that you have entrusted to us now. In Jesus Name. Amen.
