John 17:2-3

The Word

For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Exegesis

After the teachings, Jesus said a final prayer with his apostles. He prayed as the Mediator of his beloved and as a man filled with majesty and authority, as one with and equal to the Father.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:9-11

Christ was given authority over all flesh through his death; therefore, his death had some relation to every man, however it gives salvation to those who accept Him and believe in the Father who has sent Him. Eternal life could not be given to us believers, unless Christ, our guarantor, both glorified the Father, and was glorified of Him.

Application

We can relate the death of Christ as the rain that falls everywhere for everyone, however the purpose of the shower is to water one specific field; that is salvation. The essence of Christ’s atonement is to purchase eternal life for those who were given to Him by his Father; but He has also been given authority over all things. To know God, is eternal life. The knowledge of God and Jesus the Son whom the Father sent, is eternal life! Not life for a few years, but life eternal!!
