Silence.
Darkness.
Hopelessness.
Disappointment.
Confusion.
Feast of Passover.
Sabbath.
Jesus has been crucified and buried in the tomb, large stone was placed in front of the tomb, and Roman soldiers were appointed to guard the tomb.
In this joyous day of celebration where Jews were celebrating the Passover feast, Jesus’ disciples and His followers were in complete darkness, filled with various emotions, trying to make sense of what had happened yesterday. All the events that happened last couple days, from the Passover Seder (Last Supper), to Garden of Gethsamane, Jesus being falsely accused, and unjustly judged by both Sanhedrin (Jewish Religious Council) and Pontius Pilate (Roman Governer), tortured and crucified on the cross.
All happened so fast.
Disciples ran away, Peter denied Jesus three times, and most likely denied Him to His face, when Jesus was led from Annas to Caiaphas house. John observed the unjust trial from the beginning to end, hearing all the false accusations made to Jesus, seeing his Lord bearing so much suffering, even when Jesus was on the cross. He watched His beloved Rabbi, Lord, and friend died a most excruciating death of that time. I am sure many were mourning, and others in complete dismay of losing the One whom they believed was the Messiah.
What they did not know, is that the next day (Sunday), everything will change, not only for the disciples, but the whole human history. The dramatic shift of the emotions from the low of the lowest to high of the highest will happen in just one more day. But for now, they are in darkness, hopeless, disappointed, and confused.
I am reminded, that the season of darkness is not forever. We live in a fallen world, where since the beginning, when sin entered the world, all became out of whack. All the human sufferings, countless wars, and all the moral failures are the result of sin. As Christians, we are not promised a pain-free, non-violent, non-suffering and prosperous life, but what we are promised is greater than anything this world can offer. We are promised an eternal life, eternity with Him in heaven.
The darkness you and I face, or will face is the result of sin and being placed in this fallen world, but it is not permanent. Jesus is coming, the resurrected Savior will come to bring light to the darkness, death will become life, and frankly, Satan can’t do anything about it.
So wait courageously in the moment of your darkness, for He is coming, soon.
