Thursday is the day that Jesus and His disciples partook the Passover Meal. Why understanding the Passover, one of the feasts that ordained by God to Israelites, is critical to understand why Jesus would partake this meal before he was crucified and killed.
According to the Gospel of John, one of the most important verse is proclamation of the John the Baptist when he saw Jesus coming to be baptized in Jordan river. “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away to sin of the world!” (John 1:29, NKJV)
The Lamb of God? If you are Israelites, or of Jewish descent, the first thing that would comes to your mind when hearing about the lamb would be the Passover. In the climax of the story of the Exodus, the final plague that will caused Pharaoh to let Israelites depart Egypt would be the angel of death, wiping out the first born of all Egypt, except those who obeyed the command by sacrificing the lamb, who use the lamb’s blood on the doorpost, and angel of death would pass over.
Jesus, the Lamb of God, on the night of the Passover, taking his final meal with his beloved disciples, will be led to the cross to be slaughtered on our behalf, that death will pass over, and His blood will grant the eternal salvation to those who believe in Him.
It is only the Son of God, who came as the Lamb of God, would be able to provide the sacrificial atonement, by becoming sin for us, so that we may be restored to God. This is the only way for salvation, no amount of works of your doing can replace what Christ has done for us. No religions of this world can say that, for all requires you to work for your salvation, no amount of sacrifice, or good deeds is enough for your salvation.
So stop working for your salvation, but look at the cross, go to the cross, and worship the One who made a way for us. He is worthy!
Below is a short explanation of the night of the Passover presented by Crossway.
