I have never heard anyone who said, “I love peanut butter sandwich.” Maybe you are one of those few folks who prefer eating peanut butter alone, without adding anything.  The majority of those who have fully experienced the perfect mix of peanut butter and jelly sandwich (the one you see above is deep friend PB&J and your mouth should be watering at this point) would testify that it is not good to eat the peanut butter alone.

And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” Genesis 2:18

When God created Adam, He understood that Adam was not good to be alone, but created Eve in order that she will complement not only Adam, but Adam will complement Eve. What God did not do is create another Adam but created a distinctively different one than Adam. Here is the secret, when two were joined together, as it was intended to be (like peanut butter and jelly combination or any other combo of your choice), by God’s design, it would bring something beautiful and amazing. This was God’s original intent for man and woman; no one is dominating another nor competing against one another but each complementing one another, that they may be operating as one.

Brett McCracken, in his article on The Beauty of Complementarity, Goes Beyond Gender describes it this way, “Woman and man are sort of like a lock and key. A lock and a key are meaninglessly different unless they are made to go together. But when together, their difference opens something up, unlocking something fuller and deeper about the human experience.” Brett McCracken, The Gospel Coalition, July 28th, 2018.

Following up Friday’s Rap Session, in the next two weeks, our contributors will be sharing how the Bible tackles this important issue of gender.

Now go and make yourself some PB&J.
