The Word (1 Corinthian 16:15-18)
15 Now I urge you, brothers – you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints— 16 be subject to such as these, and to every fellow worker and laborer. 17 I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because they have made up for your absence, 18 for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such people.

In a formal letter, it is customary to thank all the people who are key to the cause of the author. In this Chapter, Paul the apostle thanks everyone for their support and help for his ministry. Ministry is not done by a one-man army, rather it needs support from all sorts of people with diverse gifts. Paul acknowledges everyone for their contribution by their name and how important and valuable they have been to his ministry. He is also acknowledging people by name and their contributions to his ministry. It is likely that these people were part of Corinthian Church at the time of this letter although from different places, heard gospel and accepted Christ at various times. He exhorts the church to recognize these people for the services that they have done.
We are in a time where many evangelists or pastors tend to start a ministry by their own names. It’s sad that ministry of God is known by some people’s name and identity. Paul understood the value of team work and had many helpers and supporters. He quelled factionalism in the church and explained in this letter clearly that everyone is important and unique in the Church. In the last chapter, he is acknowledging many people who are associated with his ministry and have taken care of his needs. Can we think of a few who have helped and supported us? Are we willing to talk about their contributions in our lives? Are we willing to give credit to people when credit is due, publicly? These are simple things which we often do not do. To be grateful is a virtue and we can learn from Paul.
Application
I have been around some big names in ministries and in science. I have noticed that many of them have a totally different public persona and they are some of the meanest and self-centered people you can ever meet. They are self-absorbed and take credit away from others and will do anything to get attention towards themselves. I remember in one revival meeting when someone was testifying about what God did, this minister rudely interrupted and said, ‘Did God do that through my ministry? Tell only what God did through my prayer, I don’t want to hear what God did elsewhere’ These attitudes are totally in contrast to what Paul is doing. Let’s learn from Paul’s teachings and actions. Let’s celebrate those who mean a lot to us, let’s do it today so that we may not have to tell it at their funeral.
Prayer
Heavenly father, thank you very much for those who accepted Christ because of our testimony and efforts. Thank you, Lord, for our spiritual friends, who not only edify us but also encourage and love us. Help us to be faithful friends for your servants as they toil day and night. Let us show mercy and love to our fellow believers and be encouragers of all. In Jesus Name. Amen.
