The Word (1 Corinthians 6:15-17):
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

Commentary:
The relationship between God and Church (believer’s in Christ) is a very intimate, unique and exclusive one. Paul compares this spiritual relationship with the relationship between an intimate husband and wife. God created man and women and they became one flesh in marriage. This is a sacred relationship and any such relationship outside this setting of marriage between one man and one woman is a violation of the sacred covenant. Similarly, one who is intimate with God is one in spirit with God and Holy Spirit dwells within that person. Sexual immorality is a violation of one’s relationship with God and its abuse of God’s intended purpose of one’s body. Paul warns the Church and its believers to flee from such a sin and not to entertain the idea that it is fine.
Application:
Our relationship with God is intimately personal and unique. There is no place for anyone or anything between us and God. We all have seen people in the church and those who call themselves believers live wretched and sinful life. This is an abomination unto God. The language used here by Paul is very strong. If a ‘believer’ is trapped in sexual immorality, it is extremely damaging not only to one’s body but also for the body of Christ. We have seen numerous sex scandals in churches and many high-profile people caught doing disgraceful things causing ill repute and pain to the body of Christ. This sin is not worth fighting, it is serious and requires fleeing. Joseph ran away from Potiphar’s wife. Jesus further raised the standard and told us not even to entertain such an idea in mind.
On the other side, there are many so-called churches who entertain that ‘free love’ theology. These kinds of teachings and totally in contradiction to the Word of God and these people are just sprinkling the scriptures out of context here and there to fulfill their evil desires. Perverted love has no place in the kingdom of God, its sinful and God condemns such action. However, it is very important to note that Jesus died for all sinners including those who are sexually immoral. A sinful person can confess one’s sins and come back to God and fellow believers need to accept and welcome with open arms anyone who has repented and want to live a transformed life in Christ.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Thank you, Lord, for this new and new life. Help me to glorify you today with my body. Let me honor you by having pure thoughts and live a holy and righteous life. Help me to grow in my fellowship with you and honor the sacred covenant with you by leading a pure life. Forgive my sins and make me clean. In Jesus Name. Amen.
