I. The Word: Joshua 1:2, 8-9

Now proceed to cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites… 8This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. 9I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

II. Reflection Questions

  1. How do we give meaningful encouragement?
  2. Why is it important to encourage others with specific instructions?

By Danielle Clark

We know the Lord asks us to use our words to build people up, not tear them down; but how do we do that? We’ve all experienced an empty, “You can do it!” from a well-meaning individual, but this statement likely didn’t affect your behavior or motivation. If we want to encourage others in a way that empowers them to act, then we should learn from God’s example.

Today’s verse is part of God’s commission to Joshua upon Moses’ death. Joshua has been second-in-command under Moses while they’ve led the Israelites in the wilderness. Once Moses passes away, Joshua must now lead this unpredictable, ungrateful group of people into the Promised Land. Joshua has watched their turmoil and sin for years, and could easily feel discouraged upon the death of his great mentor. Thus, God gives him an encouraging statement to express his constant support of Joshua, instruct him to stay in the Word, and give specific commands of what he is to accomplish and exhibit.

Application

Steps to Meaningful Encouragement:

Step 1: Express your unconditional support/presence/relationship

Step 2: Remind them to rely on God (prayer, Bible reading, community, etc.)

Step 3: Explicitly state what actions/traits will lead them to success

This is a stepwise plan based on God’s effective encouragement to Joshua. Any encouraging word means more from someone with whom you have a strong relationship; It comforts the recipient to know that you will always be there and have their best interest at heart.

Next, we must point them toward the ultimate source of all power, Christ. Specifically, implore them to maintain their prayer life, time in the Word, and Christian community.

Finally, avoiding flat encouragement means giving specific instructions. God tells Joshua exactly what he expects out of him, e.g. courage, avoiding dismay, and entering the Promised Land. This step is uncomfortable because our culture teaches us to never tell others what to do. However, this step is critical if we want our words to translate into action by the recipient. Though difficult, giving specific, Spirit-empowered commands will speak life into the recipient and your relationship with them.
