I. The Word: Psalms 62:5-8 (NRSV)

5  For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him.
6  He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7  On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.
8  Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah

II. Reflection Questions

1. How can you aim to trust God in this way?
2. Do you intentionally carve out time for the Holy Spirit?

Psalms is a book of poetry expressing praise, lament, prayer, and wisdom. David wrote
this Psalm while experiencing some form of attack, which is remarkable considering its
discussion of complete trust in the Lord. Today’s stanza describes God as a protector to
run towards, an entity worth waiting for, and someone we should empty our hearts for;
David states this as both a description of his experience and a command to other
Believers. Fortunately, we can accomplish all these actions when we pursue and engage
the Holy Spirit! Setting aside time for the Holy Spirit provides us with refuge,
rejuvenation, and direction; He also pushes us to relinquish control and radically trust in
His power. It often seems easier to spend time completing tasks by our own ability, yet
it’s the Holy Spirit that makes our tasks doable and valuable. Experiencing His baptism
and building this relationship requires patience, but it is easily the most worthwhile use
of your time.
