The Word – Luke 4:18-19
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lordʼs favor.”
Reflection questions
1. What’s did Jesus come to do?
2. Are you on the same mission?
Jesus speaking to a synagogue opens the scroll to this amazing passage in Isaiah and declares that now “the scripture is fulfilled”. While maybe there possibly were literally imprisoned, blind, or oppressed people in attendance for the reading, I believe Jesus good news is more appropriately applied in the spiritual sense.
This makes this passage even more applicable as the number of people in our daily lives that we see suffering from some form of spiritual poverty, blindness, or imprisonment as a result of simply not knowing or believing there is a loving God who has supplied a lasting solution increases exponentially.
What is even more amazing is that as Gods ambassadors we are not only able to receive this good news and experience its truth, but are empowered to proclaim the very same message from our king today.
“We are therefore Christʼs ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christʼs behalf: Be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20 NIV
While as Chris’ sermon touched on Sunday, sharing our beliefs can be hard in a society that equates disagreement to intolerance or any objective belief to oppression, our gospel good news (like our God) is immeasurably good, absolutely true, and amazingly powerful enough to set people free. Christ mission continues today, and the truth we have experienced in our lives is the very same that will unquestionably set others free.
Prayer
God help me to represent you as a true ambassador of your good news. Open my eyes to those who are poor, blind, and oppressed, and empower me with to proclaim your truth. In Jesus name, amen
