Devotional for July 19th, 2017

I. The Word:

“1Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them.” Matthew 5:1-2

“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.” Luke 10:1

“Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.” Luke 18:31

“He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.” Mark 5:37

II. Reflection Questions:

1. In the above four verses, notice the four different groups of people Jesus discipled.

2. In what ways did Jesus disciple these four groups differently?

3. How does these four modern avenues of discipleship: Sunday morning services, church membership, bible studies, and small groups mirror these four groups that Jesus discipled?

4. Are you being discipled, and discipling, like Jesus? Why or why not?

Randy Pope is one of my favorite pastors in America. Besides the great and holy name his passion and consistency for discipleship is just plain impressive! So for today’s starter I am sharing a 9 minute interview of Randy Pope talking about discipleship in his church. I hope you will consider making a deep commitment to do life on life discipleship like Randy talks about!

Prayer:

Jesus help us to be passionate about what you are, namely making disciples! Send us grace and power by your Spirit to make time to meet as a church, as church members, in small groups, and in life on life missional groups as well! We want to be close to Jesus! We want to be like Jesus! We believe…just help our unbelief!
