I. The Word: Genesis 3:14-15
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

The past couple of days we have looked at Genesis 3 and seen the origins of sin and it’s effects. We all know this well as we are all navigating through a very fallen and dangerous world everyday. One aspect I love to think upon is how at the moment sin entered into the world God already had a plan of salvation.
Verse 15 has been labeled the “Protoevangelium,” the first announcement of the gospel. With the understanding that the serpent represents more than just a snake, but satan himself and the seed being our savior Jesus, we see the plan of God upon entry of sin and death. The promise is that he, the seed (Jesus), will be bruised, but will ultimately crush the head of the serpent. Jesus was most definitely bruised by satan while on this earth in the suffering He endured on the cross, but it was that very cross that ultimately crushed satan by the resurrection of Christ.
Seeing how God immediately began the plan of salvation in the midst of betrayal brings joy to my heart. Yes, He disciplines His children, but not without the ultimate goal of bringing them back to Him at the great cost of His own bruising. He didn’t walk away from them even though they and we walk away from Him. Rather, He plans, not His escape, but His pursuit of winning our affection back and breaking the back of the enemy for us.
From the beginning to the end of the scripture we see the love of God, faithful until the end.
Prayer:
God I thank you that you pursue me to save me from me. When I fail you do not leave, or forsake, but you love and save. Your son took my guilt and shame on the cross and crushed the enemy under your feet. Thank you for the cross! Thank you for winning me at the cost of you. Help me to do the same for others today. To have a plan of love, hope and forgiveness quickly for those who betray me. Give me your heart of grace and love as I give you myself today. For your glory. Amen.
