Devotional for November 3rd, 2016

I. The Word:

John 16:5-15 (NASB)

5“But now I (Jesus) am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6“But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

8“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;9concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;11and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15“All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

I wanted to try something different today, I hope you like it. Instead of writing my thoughts I thought I would show you how I study a text. So I made this 26 minute video sharing not only Randy’s Reflections, but also my method of studying the Bible. You can sit and watch it, or you can listen to it on your commute. Either way, I do hope it propels your curiosity and passion for more Bible study.

Do me a solid and share a comment below to let me know if you like this format better or the written one.

  3. Hi Randy. I enjoyed the illustration of how to use a study tool as sometimes it can be overwhelming. Definitely highlights the importance of using a study tool in order to get a better understanding. Not sure about changing all the devotionals to audio but maybe using the audio version once in a while especially when it involves illustrating something. The only other comment is that once the video was done, it loads another video right after which in this case was the training for CLG Leaders. Not sure that’s a big deal but just seems out of place might just me the way YouTube works. Thanks again and Blessings.

Thanks Christine. Not gonna change them all to audio, you are correct that would be strange.

Youtube has a setting that you can prevent the next video from popping up. I think it is a button at the top right that you slide left or right. Sorry, I can’t do anything about that.

Thanks for the feedback! Hope you have a great day thinking about the HS!

  5. Nice shout out. 🙂 Thank you for showing us one way you study the Bible! I’m with Christine that a video/audio may be a bit much for every day. But I do like that you can get across triple the amount of info in half the time with visuals included. Concerning the text…I would have never thought this scripture meant so much had you not broken down the individual words. The scripture comes alive! You can almost hear Jesus saying it; and feel how the disciples felt at hearing truth so deep and practical and transformational. Who wouldn’t want to share that with others and see the light bulb turn on for them too!

  9. Thank you for sharing with us one way to study the Word! The questions you ask yourself as you read through the text helped me process these verses with deeper understanding. Spending time to ponder on a few verses allowed me to see and appreciate some interesting things about how these verses were purposefully structured.

sin – believing – righteousness – seeing (or as the Greeks translate it, “beholding/gazing for the purpose of analyzing”) – judgment

Thanks Ara. Nobody, especially me, learns from the Bible all on their own! We need each other!
